Introducing the MD Notebook Embroidery Edition: Trees

Returning to the origins of MD PAPER—the trees themselves—we have given MD Notebooks new life through tree embroidery. This special edition will make its US debut at Bungu Los Angeles Vol. 2, October 16–18, and will also be available through the MD PRODUCT USA Online Store for the duration of the event.

The story begins with how MD Notebooks are made. Unlike standard notebooks, which have an additional cover over the endpaper, the MD Notebook uses the endpaper itself as the cover. This construction allows the notebook to lie open more easily, making it comfortable to write in.
One of the most distinctive elements of the MD Notebook’s minimalist design is the gauze-like fabric along its spine. This material is commonly used to reinforce notebook spines, but it is usually hidden beneath the cover. In the MD Notebook, it is left exposed.

The fabric’s crisp, grid-like texture adds a subtle visual detail while providing the flexibility needed for the notebook to open fully.

From refining the paper pulp with water to achieve the proper consistency to the multiple steps involved in assembling and binding each notebook, the making of an MD Notebook brings together many processes, people, and machines working in harmony. Like a living thing, each notebook is the result of these interconnected elements working together.

Because the MD Notebook is designed with simplicity in mind, even the slightest mark can stand out. During manufacturing, minor imperfections can appear on the gauze-like fabric that reinforces the spine. Although these notebooks were set aside due to such imperfections, the notebooks themselves and their paper remain in pristine, usable condition.

Rather than leaving these notebooks unused, we saw an opportunity to give them a second life. Inspired by the trees from which MD PAPER originates, we embroidered a tree motif in green thread onto each cover, giving the notebooks a fresh look.
Through this upcycling initiative, we have transformed notebooks that would otherwise have gone unused into one-of-a-kind pieces, each with a story of its own.
MD Notebook [A6] Dot Grid – Embroidery Edition: Trees
A slight imperfection appeared on the fabric reinforcing the spine of the notebook during manufacturing. Although the notebook was set aside due to this mark, we gave it new life through tree embroidery rather than leaving it unused.
